Glaneur de sons : who the hell he thinks he is ?

My short history (of " nerditude ")

For years I studied cinema and sound engineering, telling myself that I would someday make a living out of it.

And one day, I realized that the first movie theater in the world (here, in Lyon, France, hometown of cinema) now hosts the ANPE (the French social help for jobless people). There are signs that you can’t miss…

Despite this I kept walking down the track. I spent time with a sound effects engineer. I took classes, did some trainings, spent time with some old Revox, worked backstage. Later, I worked on documentaries, I recorded sounds, I made some sound design and some sound effects…

All of it more or less serious. Just enough to be paid. Not at all to make a constant job of it. Cuz I’m lazy. Or I lack self confidence. Or because I’m really not good at selling myself. Lack of ambition. Maybe because I’m too French for that kind of job : I need security, regular paycheck, not too many hours, five weeks of paid vacation and three days off a week to spend with my family…

But now, I’m turning 30, I’ve got a job (not many hours), a wife and soon a daughter. I did find a balance. I’ve got the security and the time to do…

To do what, by the way ?

The bases :

" Glanage " de sons. It means that I pick the sounds I hear and that I find interesting. I walk around with a mic and I record what sounds interesting.

Or I gather some objects, and I make sounds with them. Boom, bang, skwiss, bing, gneeek, etc.

And then I clean them, I put them in files, and they wait in there to be used. That’s my meticulous side. I’m a capricorn.

Well, sometimes, I do something with them. Sounds effects. Post synchronization. Sound creations, or even music.

Since I don’t need to make money with it, I can spend time to catch butterflies. Well, someday, I’d like to earn something with it, but it’s not a priority. Maybe just to justify the incredible amount of money I spend on microphones, recorders, etc...

From the microphone to the sound directory :

With all these sounds in my computer, I had to do something with them.

So, I thought, a website  would be the perfect conclusion to all this work. That could be a pretext for demonstrations. For creations. And later, people could do something with them, and I’d be a " contributor ". That suits me.

The " open source " side, the " copyleft " argument is because, well, I’m a good guy. Of course, I’ve got the idea of selling high quality DVD’s of these sounds, but it’s mostly because the 100 Mo I have on my FTP directory might be full soon …

And aside from that :

Well, a sound directory alone doesn’t interest me.

First, I’m talkative. Didn’t you get that ?

And, well, I happen to create some stuff. I’m neither a producer, nor a musician. Let’s say a sound picker who sometimes likes to mix some of his sounds…

Besides, there is all this advise about open sources software. It’s simply because the philosophy of it is interesting enough to do some propaganda about it. But I’m not a webmaster or some kind of free lance frustrated graphist. Just a user. A capricorn one. My meticulous side might help using these tools…

And about the cat :

I put some pictures of my cat named Zarbie (" Zarbee ") only because I love her, and because I try each month to record her meow. And each time she sees me with all my set up ready ro record, she just stands silent, staring at me.
This could be my Grail…
